Submissions for a secret ballot have been made, parties now wait on Mbete

The Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and United Democratic Movement (UDM) have made their submissions to the Speaker's office in their call for a secret ballot on a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma.

Parties had until the end of business on Friday, 14 July to submit their views on the preferred means of voting when the motion is held on 8 August.

The parties say speaker Baleka Mbete should now be prepared to provide reasons for her decision on the kind of ballot that will be held, and that they will not allow her to take a decision that is not in compliance with last month's Constitutional Court ruling.

The Daily Maverick's Marianne Merten has more on this development.

It looks like the usual political fault lines have emerged, and it is now up to National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete to as the court instructed her, apply her mind and make a decision

Marianne Merten, writer at the Daily Maverick

There is no deadline, there is no time frame, she could do it on Monday, or on the day, the 8th of August.

Merten says whatever decision Mbete makes, she will have to avoid another court case.

The most important thing will be that whatever she does in the coming days, is something that can stand out and will be accepted one way or the other and she will not find herself back in court. It is a difficult situation, it is politics....
