Holomisa: secret ballot protects ANC MPs amid threats and political violence

A secret ballot in the vote of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma helps protect members of parliament (MPs) from intimidation and political violence, says UDM leader Bantu Holomisa.

Most political parties in the National Assembly made submissions on the secret ballot, showing most of the parties are requesting the vote be done in secret.

Holomisa says the secret ballot will ensure that MPs are protected amid threats and political killing in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

The MPs feel threatened, we cited the violence taking place in KZN where ANC members are killing each other.

Holomisa says opposition parties are waiting National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to deliberate on the secret ballot vote.

Should Mbete object to the secret ballot, Holomisa says opposition parties may urgently take her decision under judicial review.

She must do the honourable thing and follow the will of the majority of parties that are for the secret ballot.

I don't think we should put a gun over her neck. I think we should give her the opportunity to reason over this issue.

If we feel that she has not come up with tangible rational, the UDM will consult with other political parties.

Opposition parties have called on Mbete to recuse herself from presiding over the motion of no confidence in Zuma.

Opposition parties are expected to march in Cape Town on August 8, should the motion go ahead as scheduled.

Holomisa alluded to a rogue unit, located at the Union Buildings, which has been hired to gather intelligence on Zuma's critics and detractors.
