The Elders to celebrate Mandela Day walking in Cape Town

The Elders will hold an historic gathering and walk in central Cape Town on Mandela Day as part of the group's 10th anniversary celebration.

The Elders is an international non-governmental organisation of public figures such as elder statesmen, peace activists, and human rights advocates who were brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007.

Mary Robinson who served as the 7th, and first female President of Ireland speaks to CapeTalk's Africa Melane about the walk and how their 10 year anniversary will be celebrated.

In May 2007 Madiba joined us at this round table and told us to be independent, speak truth to power and to be humble and listen to the people.

Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland

We have tried that over the last ten years and now we have this great opportunity in this year-long campaign to walk in his freedom in the four areas of freedom that we have identified.

Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland

Robinson says the campaign is based on peace, health, justice and equality.

Members of the Elders include the likes of Martti Ahtisaari (former president of Finland and Nobel Prize laureate), Kofi Annan, Ban Ki Moon, Ernesto Zedillo, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Graça Machel.
