Uber reaches out to government to resolve driver intimidation

Uber management says they have requested a meeting with Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, saying the ongoing intimidation of drivers in Johannesburg is not something it can resolve on its own.

Private security has been brought in over the months to monitor violence at pick up points, especially near Gautrain stations.

Intimidation has however continued. There have been reports of metered taxi drivers blocking off commuters at the Sandton Gautrain station on Monday morning.

A listener called in to say he is aware of a group of metered cab drivers near Bedfordview, who have harassed Uber drivers.

Normally you will find them at the Bedford Shopping Centre and the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

General Manager at Uber South Africa, Jonathan Ayache says they are engaging with the Saps.

Security are not police. They can only do so much.

Jonathan Ayache, Uber General Manager

We are engaging with various Saps officers and have requested a meeting with the minister of police. We are waiting to hear back. We do want to sit down at the table to find a long term solution because this is not sustainable.

Jonathan Ayache, Uber General Manager

This taxi intimidation is lawless and needs to stop.
