High profile politicians believed to be 'pulling the strings' in assassinations

The Moerane Commission of Inquiry into political killings is underway in Kwazulu Natal.

The commission set up in 2014 has heard how the Glebelands hostel in Umlazi has become common place for assassinations.

At least 89 people have been murdered since March 2014 without a single arrest being made.

The commission's probe also comes after the Public Protector’s office found that the eThekwini Municipality and police failed in their constitutional mandate to protect the victims of political killings and illegal evictions.

Eyewitness News reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo says a submission by independent community activist Vanessa Burger has corroborated these findings.

She has set the scene of the conditions under which people at the Glebelands Hostel are living in, basically painting a very bleak picture and describing the hostel as a reservoir for assassinations and where most, if not all, the hit men used by politicians are coming from the hostel.

We have also heard that the recent assassination attempt on three ANC uMzimkhulu councillors were also hit men from the hostel, she believes these hit men are still in uMzimkhulu....

Burger claims these killings are supported by high profile politicians.

She has made claims that it goes all the way to a national level as high up as President Jacob Zuma where she says these assassinations are supported by high profile politicians as a proxy to national factions, and she has even said it is linked to the factions as far as the elective conference at the end of this year.

Ziyanda Ngcobo, EWN reporter

The commissioners are questioning where she is getting these claims from and her research methodology. But she strongly believes that the reason why Glebelands is a reservoir for assassinations is because there are politicians pulling the strings behind the scene.
