Chairperson at Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Themba Godi, says former CEO of State Social Security Agency (Sassa), Thokozani Magwaza, vowed that he will never resign unless he is pushed out of his job.
According to reports on Monday, Magwaza resigned as CEO of Sassa following the ongoing battle between the agency and the Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini.
Godi spoke highly of Magwaza saying he is a man of good principles and has rescued many government agencies like when he was chief executive of The Road accident Fund.
Thokozani Magwaza seemed to be a man who loved his job, a man who wanted to do the simple things the right way. He is one of the few civil servants who will stand up and never cover up for their political principles, and stand for what is right and true.— Themba Godi, Chairperson of Scopa
He came with the history of being successful in managing state affairs, there was no reason he would fail.— Themba Godi, Chairperson of Scopa
Godi says he had a very long discussion with Magwaza on Sunday trying to persuade him to "hang in there". He says at the end of their discussion his response was "lets see what will happen if I am still there".
He says he will carry the baton forward and make sure that the contract with South African Post Office goes ahead in handling Sassa grants.
Post Office is a government agency so they'll be no wastage of money and unfortunately there will be no kick backs for those who are used to kick backs. This is to guarantee that social grants are given properly without CPS.— Themba Godi, Chairperson of Scopa
