Commission needs to verify Glebelands Hostel, ANC hitmen claims - analyst

The Moerane Commission of Inquiry into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal should put in place mechanisms to verify the explosive claims made during the hearings, says political analyst Lukhona Mnguni.

This comes after independent researcher Vanessa Burger implicated the police and politicians in the sourcing of their hitmen from Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi.

The commission has heard how Glebelands is a place where politicians shop around for assassins, reports EWN's Ziyanda Ngcobo.

Mnguni says the commission need to authenticate the research and claims made in order to legitimise the evidence and testimony.

If the commission can't verify claims it becomes evidence they can't rely on going forward or to inform the report.

Lukhona Mnguni, political analyst

One does not wish to dismiss the claims, but they do need to be authenticated and verified, lets we risk researchers being seen as casting aspersions.

It has emerged that at least 89 people have been murdered since March 2014.

The commission heard how assassins live at the residence undetected due to mismanagement by the eThekwini Municipality when allocating rooms.

Today, University of KwaZulu-Natal academic Paulus Zulu has been testifying and sharing his research into political violence.

Zulu has revealed the dysfunction in the KZN electoral system and the lack of regulation in the political space.

He says it affects the relationship among councilors in the province and says it is a dysfunctional democracy because it is being manipulated by people who don't have qualifications.

Zulu has proposed that politicians need to have some form of academic and moral qualifications in order to eradicate the culture of committing murders for political positions.
