My Broadband's Jan Vermeulen says the 'sim swap scam' sounds like a rejigged version of an older con that did the rounds.

He describes how someone will phone you with a credible sounding problem that you may be experiencing either on your computer, phone, VCR or TV.

And then says 'I will fix it for you, all you have to do is x, y, z - usually giving them privileged access to your device, or giving them some kind of private information that they can then hijack to exploit your identity.

He adds that the way these con artists operate is not the way mobile service providers deal with sim cards.

Finally, he suggests if you are uncomfortable with any such call, tell the person you will call them back on their listed call centre line from their website.
