Acting SABC chief executive officer James Aguma has resigned with immediate effect in the middle of his disciplinary hearing.
His lawyer, Osborne Molatudi told the SABC's board the news of Aguma's resignation.
Aguma was suspended two months ago for allegedly not telling the truth to the SABC's interim board about former COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
He is also accused of tender irregularities and fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
EWN reporter Masego Rahlaga says it wasn't a surprise that this announcement was made. She says it was obvious that something big was going to come out of the disciplinary hearing especially after Aguma's legal team tried to stall the process.
We did kind of expect that today would be a big announcement but it was a bit surprising that it was a resignation.— Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter
Aguma was going to approach the labour court for an urgent interdict to stop the proceedings of his disciplinary hearing.
After he resigned there is no reason for him to continue with the process, says Rahlaga.
She says the SABC has called an impromptu press meeting scheduled for 1 pm on Wednesday to respond to the recent developments regarding Aguma's resignation.
We are expecting them to welcome the resignation...— Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter
Aguma's lawyer said that the SABC will withdraw all charges against Aguma but the public broadcaster is yet to respond on the matter.
Aguma is expected to tender his resignation no later than 1 pm on Wednesday.
