Barnes says Magwaza had sent him a letter expressing the agency's intentions to appoint the Post Office to pay social grants.

On Monday, the Department Of Social Development released a statement about the sudden departure of Acting CEO of the South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) Thokozani Magwaza from the agency.

It now appears that not only was Magwaza fired, but he also sent a final letter to Mark Barnes, SA Post Office CEO, expressing the agency's intentions to appoint the Post Office to pay social grants.

Barnes says he is disappointed with Magwaza's exit from Sassa.

We have been working closely, the two teams together. We engaged fruitfully with him and his team.

Mark Barnes, SA Post Office CEO

Barnes says the Post Office is not seeking to take over what the department of social development does but rather offered their help.

He says the letter he received last week, detailed intentions of a collaboration between the department and Post Office to see how the two entities can design an effective, enduring solution, that will transfer skills onto Sassa while utilising the infrastructure of the Post Office.

It was a collaborative agreement which to me, makes the most economic and efficiency sense.

Mark Barnes, SA Post Office CEO

It was an engagement directly with us which was a deviation of the normal tender processes that one would go through and so that had to be, and was, approved by National Treasury.

Mark Barnes, SA Post Office CEO

There is no signed contract at this point says Barnes.
