Joburg mayor installs CCTV cameras on Vilakazi street to combat crime

Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has launched CCTV cameras in the famous Vilakazi Street in Soweto.

There's recently been a spate of violent crimes in the area

Mashaba says he made a commitment to find money to install cameras on Vilakazi Street following the shooting incident at Sakhumzi Restaurant earlier this year.

I am really so pleased today now that we have managed to deliver on this mandate. We have put in cameras that will be monitored 24 hours.

We have actually launched the latest technology in terms of capturing images on this cameras.

Mashaba says they've installed 15 cameras throughout the street that will be monitored by the JMPD at the head office in Martindale.

He says they are trying everything in their power to control crime in the City of Joburg.

There are certain things we can control and crime is one of them. For me to say that we not going to have crime in the street, I'd be lying.
