Baby dies at unregistered crèche as gov department appeals daycare death ruling

The Western Cape Social Development Department plans to appeal a High Court ruling that found it responsible for the death of a baby at a Pinelands creche.

Earlier this month, the court ruled that the department and the daycare centre are jointly to blame for the death of a baby at an unregistered facility in 2010.

Five-month-old Ava Barley accidentally asphyxiated after she rolled off a bed at the Pinelands facility, seven years ago.

A judge ruled that the department's failure to register the illegal daycare centre contributed to the infant's death.

The department was ordered to pay damages to baby Ava's parents.

In a separate case, the department is also investigating the death of 11-month-old Israel Williams.

He died at an unregistered day care facility in Hangberg in Hout Bay last week.

It's still unclear what led to the death of baby Israel, reports EWN's Monique Mortlock.

Department officials claim that the creche was in the process of being registered since last year.
