Young doctor uses social media to create awareness on public health issues

702's Gugu Mhlungu speaks to Dr Sivuyile Madikana, medical doctor and health advocate, about his love for medicine and where it all began.

Madikana is passionate about public health in South Africa, especially raising awareness among the youth about communicable diseases like HIV/AIDS.

He uses social media as a health awareness tool throughout Southern Africa to create awareness and reach as many young people as possible.

I just do everything that makes me happy, that gives me the satisfaction, whether its being an advocate or school. They somehow integrate and make me the person that I am.

Dr Sivuyile Madikana, medical doctor and health advocate

I went to medical school and I had this dream of working for the UN and helping out children ... that's how I got into the health sector.

Dr Sivuyile Madikana, medical doctor and health advocate

Madikana was exposed to the health environment at a very young age. His mother was a nurse and his dad also worked at the hospital.

He says he spent time in that environment and with time developed the love for it.

Madikana will travel to New York in September to complete his Masters degree in public health.
