Court grants CoCT eviction order at the Steen Villa complex

A number of families from the Steenvilla housing development in Military Road, Steenberg, were almost evicted on Monday.

The units are managed by the non-profit company SOHCO (The Social Housing Company) which works in partnership with the City of Cape Town to provide affordable housing.

Human Settlements MEC in Western Cape, Bonginkosi Madikizela, says out of the 700 households 22 have been refusing to pay for the last 12 months.

He says they've been trying so hard to engage these people since last year but they are being adamant that they will not pay and are entitled to stay for free.

The court has granted the City permission to evict.

The court doesn't grant evictions very easily, you have to make sure you have done everything you can to try and engage people.

Seemingly there are people who think they must live there for free and social housing development doesn't work like that.

Madikizela says the 22 that were suppose to be evicted were not evicted as they mobilised people to block the sheriff of the court to enter the premises.

Alternative accommodation is not provided in this instance as the court believe that these people are just refusing to pay that which they can afford.
