Getting to know SA's prolific writer Zukiswa Wanner

Eusebius Mckaiser introduces his guest Zukiswa Wanner as a prolific author.

In addition to writing fiction, she has also contributed essays to Oprah, Elle and Juice magazines, literary reviews and essays to Afropolitan and Sunday Independent, as well as the international online journal, African Writing.

She is also a founding member of the ReadSA initiative, a campaign encouraging South Africa to read South African works.

Her debut novel, The Madams, published in November 2006, dealt with racial role reversals in post-apartheid South Africa.

Wanner says she was born to a Zimbabwean mom in Zambia and a South African father, which she explains is why most of her books are set in the country. She says her novel _Cape Town - Joburg _was her love letter to South Africa.

It was also me, at my angriest. Like how have we failed, looking at certain things.

Zukiswa Wanner, author

She says she enjoys experimenting with various themes for her novels but adds that identity is a common theme she conveys through her work.

Wanner adds that freedom as a fiction writer to be expressive about her political commentary is done through the mouths of her characters.

Fiction also her allows her the opportunity to explore themes unfamiliar to her, through dialogues with her characters, she adds.

African literature professor Professor Pumla Gqola reiterates Wanner's talent.

As a professor of literature, I absolutely relish how incredibly powerful her work is to teach and I enjoy seeing many of students move when they've read 'Men of the South'. And you can actually, tangibly see how they are changed by this novel. Sometimes they change their politics on sexuality significantly.
