For now we are not under pressure due to Nehawu strike - WC health MEC

A strike by about 5000 National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) workers could result in blood test backlogs. Workers belonging to the National Education Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) downed tools on Wednesday.

Dr. Nomafrench Mbombo, MEC for Health in the Western Cape says the national strike will affect all nine provinces. She adds that the department of health is trying to explore other avenues where blood and lab services will continue running such as private labs.

For now we are not necessarily under pressure.

Mbombo explains if the strike continues and more samples required then pressure may mount in the next two to three days. In an emergency blood samples will be sent to private facilities says Mbambo.
