Many motorists who are involved in car accidents find themselves paying exorbitant amounts to tow truck operators.
These operators can charge up to R10 000 for towing a vehicle plus storage.
Insurance risk manager Nico Esterhuizen says this is a common practice by these tow truck operators.
He says the towing business is highly unregulated and makes it very difficult to deal with the situation.
Sometimes we manage to negotiate the price down ....sometimes we go as far as taking the matter to court and ask the tower to explain to the courts why are they asking for R10 000 charge to tow a vehicle.— Nico Esterhuizen, Insurance Risks Manager at South African Insurance Association
Spokesperson for the National Consumer Commission, Trevor Hattingh says before a tow truck operator renders his service to you he needs to disclose how much he will be charging you.
He needs to disclose his service terms and conditions right before he hooks up your vehicle... The must be an agreement on the price.— Trevor Hattingh, National Consumer Commission spokesman
