Soccer boss Khoza questions match carrying on after deadly stampede

Orlando Pirates Chair, Irvan Khoza says senior council will conduct an investigation following a deadly stampede at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday.

Two people died and a number of others were injured during the Soweto derby between Orlando pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Khoza and Chief's chairman Kaizer Motaung have extended their condolences to the victim's families, during a press conference on Monday.

Various reasons have been put forward for what happened when a large group of people tried to force their way into the stadium about half an hour before kick-off.

A separate investigation has been launched by football bodies Safa and Stadium Management South Africa into the sale of fraudulent tickets, as this may have contributed to the incident.

Khoza pleaded with the public and media to allow investigations to take place.

The chairmen have reassured the public that safety precautions were taken and properly followed.

Meanwhile, questions have been raised about a decision to continue with the game.

It is a question of morality and that is what Dr Khoza was speaking about. He did highlight that morally such a game should not be carrying on but those decisions are left up to certain individuals. He left the question hanging in the air but he did, however, make it obvious that he was aware that the question was being asked...
