"Most serious confrontation between Russia and the United States since 1986"

Russian President Valdimir Putin has confirmed that the United States will have to cut its diplomatic and technical staff by 755 people by 1 September.

On Friday, Moscow ordered the US cut diplomatic staff and said it would seize two US diplomatic properties after the US House of Representatives and the Senate approved new sanctions on Russia.

Stephen Grootes spoke to International Relations professor, John Stremlau about the implications this may have.

This is I think since 1986, the most serious confrontation between Russia and the United States.

Prof John Stremlau, Professor of International Relations at Wits University

This sanction legislation is as much about constraining Donald Trump as it is constraining the Russians.
