By-laws you need to know when feeding your alternative water sources at home

Is it allowed to feed your alternative water sources into your home’s water supply?

This is what the by-law says:

Prevention of pollution of water

  1. (1) An owner must provide and maintain measures approved by the Director to prevent the entry of a substance which may be a danger to health or adversely affect the potability of water into- (a) the water supply system; and (b) any part of the water installation on his or her premises. (2) The Director must approve the appropriate level of backflow prevention required in each instance.

Farouk Robertson, Communication Officer: Water and Sanitation at Water Demand Management & Strategy says the bylaw is conditional.

Firstly if the city is an independent installation, not linked to the existing plumbing then there is no risk to the city's drinking water supply.

When there is an interconnection, there would be two requirements. One would be having an appropriate back pressure float valve. The second one, would be where we have an air gap.

Robertson advises against shortcuts when feeding alternative water sources.

The issue around grey water is still under discussion adds Robertson. He does say you shouldn't hold onto grey water for longer than twenty four hours.
