"SA wastes the equivalent of 6 stadiums full of food a year or 10 million tons"

Eusebius McKaiser confesses issues of resources such as food, water, and power do not receive nearly as much media coverage as politics. Yet these issues are crucial to our future survival.

Food is pivotal to our survival, as is water says Pavitray Pillay.

Pillay is the manager of the southern African sustainable seafood WWF Initiative Consumer Awareness and Outreach (WWF SASSI).

Pillay says food is pivotal to our existence and nutrition and adds that if we have healthy people we have a healthy democracy and a thriving economy. The problem comes in, in how much we waste adds Pillay.

In South Africa we're wasting about ten million tons of food per annum. That is massive. That is about six stadiums filled with edible food.

Pavitray Pillay, Manager, Southern African Sustainable Seafood WWF Initiative Consumer Awareness and Outreach

Pillay stresses that food is wasted across the entire supply chain. She says the country's biggest wastage happens at agriculture and post harvesting levels where about 50 % of where food is wasted. Of that ten million, 44% is fruit and vegetables.

She explains that when you have so much wastage and about eleven to fourteen million people who are food insecure, you cannot be productive and contribute to a developing country or to a healthy society.

If we managed our food properly we could feed everybody in our country, we produce enough food.

Pavitray Pillay, Manager, Southern African Sustainable Seafood WWF Initiative Consumer Awareness and Outreach

Social grants are one mechanism to help people get food insecure but they are not enough explains Pillay. She says key interventions across the entire system to help and build a strong and healthy society.
