Sanef launches urgent interdict to arrest BLF leader

South African Editor's Forum wants Black First Land First's Andile Mngxitama arrested and imprisoned for three months for contempt of court.

Sanef lawyer Okyerebea Ampofu-Anti talks about the interdict and the ongoing behaviour of Black First Land First and its leader Andile Mngxitama.

The application is based on the fact that Black First land First and its leader have breached the previous court order which was obtained last month in July, where they were interdicted from harassing certain journalists who were applicants in that matter.

Okyerebea Ampofu-Anti, Sanef lawyer

The interdict has not been respected, she says, with BLF members attending an amaBhungane hosted talk on the Gupta leaks last week, causing chaos and engaging in the very behaviour they were interdicted from doing.

Amongst other things, assaulting, intimidating and harassing a number of journalists.

Okyerebea Ampofu-Anti, Sanef lawyer

A court interdict is only as strong as the willingness of the state to implement it.

Okyerebea Ampofu-Anti, Sanef lawyer

She says we as citizens rely on the police to do so, and in this case, the police officers at the amaBhungane talk were not willing to take action against BLF. This, despite being shown a copy of the court order, citing that they did not want to get involved in political matters, adds Ampofu-Anti.

amaBhungane's Stefaans Brummer claims he was attacked by BLF members on Wednesday at Cape Town International Airport.

The conduct has been ongoing and what happened today at Cape Town International Airport was just another extension of the thuggish behaviour that BLF and its leader have repeatedly engaged in.

Okyerebea Ampofu-Anti, Sanef lawyer

She says this is not about having ideological differences. BLF has every right to oppose the journalists' reports as long as they do not use intimidation, harassment, threats or violence against them.

Now Mngxitama is saying he was attacked at the meeting last Thursday.

It is not a 'he said, she said'. We have video footage showing that Andile's version of events is entirely false and that's what makes this so outrageous.

Okyerebea Ampofu-Anti, Sanef lawyer

Sanef is asking for a court order stating that there would be a 90 day imprisonment period which would be suspended indefinitely, designed to ensure that the court order is not infringed again.
