Klipspruit community calls on Gauteng Premier to help sort out grievances

The community of Klipspruit West in Soweto took to the streets on Thursday in protests over the appointment of a black principal at Klipspruit West Secondary School.

The coloured community barricaded the K43 Highway with burning tyres and a Putco bus after ordering the driver to park his vehicle across the road and leave the area.

EWN reporter Thando kubheka says community members say they feel sidelined by the education department despite the efforts taken by MEC Panyaza Lesufi to engage the community.

The are calling on Gauteng Premier David Makhura to come to Klipspruit West to address some of their demands, claiming that most of the coloured people in the area are unemployed and government has forgotten about them.

According to Kubheka, Makhura's office has not yet responded.

However, the Gauteng Education Department has released a statement cautioning the community to raise their issues through the correct channels and not by disrupting schools.

An interim district official has been appointed by Lesufi to be present at the school while the department is looking at the appointment of a new principal.
