Timol time of death under review as new details emerge

Anti-apartheid activist, Ahmed Timol died after falling ten floors from the John Vorster Square police station in 1971. The apartheid regime claimed he had committed suicide.

In 1972 the Timol family rejected the original inquest into the anti-apartheid activist's death, and have since been trying to unearth the real version of events and evidence to prove it.

EWN senior reporter Barry Bateman says an 'ear-witness', appeared before the court with developments that could dispute the time of Timol's death.

The witness recalled an incident that took place in October 1971, while at a filling station just outside the John Vorster Square police station. While filling up petrol, the witness heard a thud but police prevented him from getting a closer view of what had happened.

Bateman says the significance of this account disputes the police's statements that the death happened in the afternoon.
