The Gathering: Robust discussions on media independence

The Gathering: Media Edition is currently underway at the Cape Town Convention Centre. Newsmakers, editors, and entrepreneurs are engaged in robust discussions on issues facing South Africa.

State capture and the current political state are some of the topics on today's agenda.

The Roman Catholic Church's Father Russel Pollit says the first interesting discussion led by Bruce Whitfield with Sipho Pityana focused on whether big business is doing enough to support the independence of the media.

Joe Thloloe, Press Council CEO, posed the question about freedom in the media, saying he never thought he would relive what took place in the 1970s in South Africa, having to fight once again for media freedom.

Another person who was heading the discussion was Xolani Gwala from Primedia, speaking about how activism has changed and in what way the media is helping to get into the deeper issues on this like protests, getting to see what's behind those protests...
