Khoi story Krotoa hits cinemas this weekend

The story of a Khoi girl forced into slavery in Jan van Riebeeck’s home hits cinemas on Friday.

Krotoa tells the story of how a servant girl in the 1650s was taken into Van Riebeeck’s fort at the age of 11 and eventually became his interpreter.

She later served as a liaison between the Dutch and the Khoi.

Krotoa (Crystal Donna Roberts ) ends up being rejected by her own community when she tries to find the middle way between the two cultures.

The film premiered in Cape Town on Monday night and has received various international accolades.

Ray White spoke to Director Roberta Durrant about the film.

It is an interesting period of our time and the writer tried and succeeded in giving a female voice to Krotoa, because history was written largely by men and written from quite a sort of subjective point of view.

Roberta Durrant, director

She was there at a very interesting point in our history when the Europeans arrived here.
