St John's headmaster lied about transformation consultation, parent confirms

It has emerged that St John's College principal Paul Edey lied about actively engaging with Wits Professor Sarah Nuttall over transformation at the school.

Last week, the headmaster claimed that he had approached Nuttall to deal with a former teacher who was found guilty of racism.

St John’s College says Keith Arlow tendered his resignation after there was a mutual agreement that he should go.

Edey has since apologised for inappropriately invoking Nuttall's name during an interview with 702 last week.

Nuttall is a parent at St John's College and has been calling for transformation at the school for some time.

I wasn't brought in. I walked into his office to ask them why they weren't doing anything and give them suggestions.

Nuttall says the school's leadership has lost the trust of many parents and they have yet to regain it.

I was infuriated and wrote to Mr Edey and told him to desist from using my name at all. I demanded a very strong apology.

I felt used, because I had gone to him and warned him that private schools were next if they didn't listen to the student movement.

She says it is unfortunate that the headmaster only appeared to be receptive of an anti-racism policy after the outrage over their racist staff member.

Prof Nuttall penned a poignant piece for the Huffington Post, in which she berates the happenings at St Johns and says that 'everything must change' at the school.

She and other concerned parents have formed a collective that is calling on a Student Representative Council (SRC) to be instated.

The collective will also discuss the future of principal Edey at the school.
