Ad hoc Parly committee kicks off on party political funding

Ad hoc committee on party political funding kicks off in Parliament. EWN parliamentary reporter Gaye Davis says 17 submissions have been made with a fair spread of views.

All political parties and relevant NGOs and civil organisations will be putting forward their cases, she says.

There is unanimity that funding needs to be better regulated.

Two main issues were raised.

1. There needs to be more funding for political parties

  1. There needs to be regulation of private funding.

It should be allowed to continue..but there is no law to govern private donations and they depend heavily on them.

Political parties have argues that this might scare off private funders, but civil society has been campaigning strongly for these funders to be made transparent, says Davis.

She says we know political parties are funded by the ICC, Parliament for constituency work and caucuses, as well as from the provinces.

About R1.1 billion is the estimate of the amount of money that political parties have had available to them in the last financial year....how much they get on top of that in the form of private donations is the million dollar question.
