[LISTEN] Why helicopter parenting may lead to raising an unemployable child

Caller Christo says it is good to be protective over your children but overprotecting them can have negative consequences in the long run.

He says it is important to withdraw from certain aspects of their lives and encourage independent thinking.

I read a recent report that was done on this sort of parenting and it shows that long term these kids can actually become unemployable because in their working environment there is no sheltering, there is deadlines and if these children don't have the coping mechanisms to cope with that kind of pressure, they will actually fall apart.

Christo, caller

You are actually doing everything for them, so it is very important to sort of withdraw from certain aspects of their lives and allow them to figure it out for themselves because when you are in a corporate environment you have to be able to think for yourself.

Dr Jane Hofmeyer explains the reason why parents can be overprotective and why they are anxious about their children's well being.
