There is no political will to end violence in Glebelands Hostel - activist

The police in Kwazulu Natal says that a woman was shot dead while doing her laundry in the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi on Thursday night, becoming the ninety-second person to be killed there.

Over sixty people have died at the hostel in a period of just two years, leading to a full commission into the hostel.

Vanessa Burger, independent Community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice tells host of The Midday Report, Stephen Grootes that there is no political will to end the violence in the area.

There is no political will to solve the problems so until that changes people are still going to be killed.

Vanessa Burger, independent Community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice

Burger says the political will needs to come from the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC). The violence needs priority attention adds Burger.

You can't just lose 92 people to politically connected hitmen and allow them to get away with it. What does that say about our government?

Vanessa Burger, independent Community Activist for Human Rights & Social Justice

The ANC is an agent and an overriding body that is failing to act, at the same time explains Burger. She goes on to say that the ruling party also appears to be benefitting from these incidents.

Burger says they have been requesting a police team be called in from a different province since 2014. She adds that an external unit from the National Intervention Unit (NIU) was placed in the area in 2016 but only lasted two months before being withdrawn with no explanation.
