Timol inquest postponed as judge recalls several witnesses

The inquest into the death of Ahmed Timol has been postponed until next week because the judge wants to recall several witnesses.

Timol fell to his death in 1971 from the 10th floor of the John Vorster Square police station.

The security branch claimed he committed suicide.

Eyewitness News reporter, Barry Bateman has more on developments on the inquest.

What we did hear from Judge Billy Motlhe is that he intends to recall the two pathologists who had testified.

The reason the judge is doing this is because evidence emerged yesterday, by a businessman Mohamed Thokan. He was on that day a 27 October 1971 at a filling station across the road from John Voster Square in the morning where he said he heard a thud and somebody said someone had fallen from the building....

The significance of this is that it puts the death some time in the morning, while according to official police records and the postmortem it puts the time of death in the afternoon.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

The significance is that this could lead into the argument that there was in fact a cover up.
