It has been one year since the Democratic Alliance (DA) took control of three key metros; Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay.
Political analyst Gareth van Onselen says the has done well in the limited time that it has been in governance.
He explains that there are three main priorities for parties, once they take over a municipality:
- stabilise the administration
- clean out corruption and maladministration that preceded
- get municipal finances in order
Van Onselen says the opposition party has been able to achieve the three objectives so far.

He says the successful governance of metros will demonstrate to voters, primarily in Guateng, that the DA brings about tangible change.
Van Onselen advises that the DA is demonstrating the difference that it is making in metros ahead of the 2019 general elections.
