Recession for who? H&M looks to open 17th store in SA

Swedish multinational clothing retail company H&M have taken over the space in Canal Walk where Stuttafords used to be and are scheduled to open their new store in November.

While other stores in South Africa are struggling and closing down, H&M seems to be doing well.

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies speaks to H&M Country Manager Par Darj and Amelia-May Woudstra, PR manager at H&M, about their secret to success.

We don't look much at what others do, the idea is to focus on ourselves. We are a global fashion company that only works in retail - we buy and sell clothing and we are very close to the trends.

Par Darj, Country Manager at H&M South Africa

Every week we change the look of the stores and everyday, we have garments coming into our stores and I think there's a pace in our stores that is different from others.

Par Darj, Country Manager at H&M South Africa

It is important to turn the stock around in a quick path and to buy in a sequence.

Par Darj, Country Manager at H&M South Africa

According to Darj, they have 1 200 people employed in their stores - most of whom are from disadvantaged communities.

By the end of 2017, H&M will have 17 stores in South Africa.

He says university qualifications is not on top of their employment requirement list, but they do require employees to the right the right attitude.

We employ a lot of good people with a bright future in H&M and with a good attitude.
