How reliable is PSA (prostate cancer) test?

Men are usually advised to do the PSA test and check for prostate cancer when they reach a certain age.

The PSA test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer. The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood.

But how reliable is this PSA test?

Urologist at George Mukhari Hospital, Dr Shingai Mutambirwa says it sometimes happens that the PSA test doesn't detect the cancer, which is why they sometimes combine it with a rectal examination.

That's the reason why we usually want to combine the PSA blood test with the rectal examination, which is quick, just a finger in the anus just to check once a year to make sure there are no lumps and bumps on the prostate.

Dr Shingai Mutambirwa, Urologist

Mutambirwa recommends that South African males from the age of 40 check regularly for prostate cancer but if they have a family history of breast cancer and prostate cancer, to start as early as 35 years.

If you have a family history of prostate cancer or breast cancer you have about five times increased risk...
