Abalone and crayfish poaching remains a huge problem in the Western Cape. Beverley Schafer, chairperson of the Standing Committee on Economic Development Tourism and Agriculture at the Western Cape government, says this remains a problem due to the huge lack of resources to combat poaching.
Schafer adds that poaching has a larger effect on communities than we realise. She says that there is a close correlation between poaching, drug syndicates and prostitution.
