Today should be a day focused completely on gender equality - Thandi Modise

As part of commemorating Women's Day, Bonnie Mbuli (standing in for Pippa Hudson) chats to Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and deputy head of the ANC Women’s league, Thandi Modise.

Modise reflected on some of the issues faced by women in South Africa and what this day means to her as a woman in leadership of this country.

Today is not a day just to have braais, it should be a day about gender equality.

Thandi Modise, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces

Today is the day we need to do a lot reflection... are we happy with the state of affairs.

Thandi Modise, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces

We really need to take a stand as South Africa women and say it is not done in our name and it is not done on our bodies.

Thandi Modise, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces

Modise also reflected on how growing up in Huhudi township near Vryburg (in the North West) was.

She says she had a very difficult upbringing but is grateful to her mother who shaped her to be the woman that she is today.

She was a strong woman. At some point she had to be left with 6 kids but she was something I am not, a true christian.

Thandi Modise, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces

I hardly go to church. I believe a good person does not need to go to church every Sunday, the life you live everyday must reflect the values of who you really are.
