Ratings downgrade will affect new sexual offences courts - Lisa Vetten
Women’s rights groups say the re-establishment of sexual offences courts will restore faith in the criminal justice system.
Hundreds of people, mostly women, marched through the streets of Cape Town, calling for better access to the justice system.
The Justice Department is in the process of re-establishing sexual offences courts.
Lisa Vetten, research associate, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, says there will be a challenge in resourcing these courts.
Following the ratings downgrade... it has affected the degree to which these courts can be rolled out extensively and the range to which they are resourced.Lisa Vetten, Research Associate, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research
She says law enforcement has declined over the years.
Some of it has to do with budget cuts, infighting that has been going on within the justice system, I think we have lost focus there. And sometimes people who have not necessarily got the right skills but are politically connected have been appointed to the wrong positions.Lisa Vetten, Research Associate, Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research
