Who in a relationship should undergo sterilization?

Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Dr Howard Manyonga speaks to 702's Phemelo Motene about sterilization, who should get it between males and females and how safe is the procedure.

Manyonga spoke about different contraception methods that can be considered if the couple still considers to have children at a later stage.

He also spoke about the more permanent methods like surgical procedure for females (called tubal ligation) and male sterilization also known as vasectomy.

Because sterilization is permanent, Dr Manyonga says it should be used only by couples who are completely sure that they will never want to have children.

He says it should be a decision taken by both partners, not just one person.

This is a decision for the couple, it is not just for the man or woman and consider some of the risks that comes with the decision.
