Male circumcision lowers the risk of HIV for women by 30%

There is now scientific proof that circumcised men lower their female partner's risk of acquiring HIV by as much as 30%. This is according to COO of Careworks, Rachael Rawlinson.

Although there are limitations of what they know in terms of the research, it focused mostly on what happens when the man is circumcised and the benefits it has for the women, says Rawlison.

Prior to this research, there was no proof that male circumcision would have immediate benefit to their partners, it was just a speculation.

The research was presented at the recent International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science IAS 2017 in Paris.

When a man is circumcised, he reduces his risk of acquiring that HI Virus within his foreskin -by removing the foreskin he reduces the risk of STI as well .

Rachael Rawlinson, COO of Careworks

The cultural beliefs of some ethnic groups are taken into consideration in the way circumcision is marketed and presented, says Rawlinson.

The department of Health has put in place a program to get sexually active males in South Africa circumcised. It is free and accessible in a wide variety of clinics.
