NPA: prosecutors never raised questions about legality of #GuptaLeaks

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has refuted media reports that its prosecutors have raised questions about the legality of the leaked Gupta emails.

The NPA has released a statement calling a City Press report a sensational attempt to discredit and malign the NPA and its leadership.

Sunday reports by the City Press claim that prosecutors guiding the Hawks investigation believe the leaked emails are not admissible evidence.

NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku says NPA's prosecution team is only there to give prosecutorial guidance to the Hawks.

Mfaku says the NPA will only express its views on the emails once a docket is completed and the evidence is studied by prosecutors.

He argues that prosecutors cannot impose investigative methodology on the Hawks.

They will never lead the investigation because they do not have investigative powers.

The prosecutors who are handling the matter never raised any issues of legality.

The NPA has not been presented with a fully investigated docket for a decision.

Meanwhile, City Press senior reporter Abram Mashego says he spoke to reliable sources within the NPA for his story.

Mashego explains that he cannot reveal the identity of his sources and says that Mfaku is lying.

My sources are very reliable, let the public judge.

The NPA says it will take up the matter with the Press Ombudsman.
