KZN ANC conference court case ‘could turn everything on its head’

A full bench of judges in the Pietermaritzburg High Court will this week deliberate on the African National Congress (ANC’s) KwaZulu-Natal policy conference outcome.

Political analyst Karima Brown says this matter is massive as the ANC heads to its national elective policy conference for a new party president in December.

KwaZulu-Natal, President Jacob Zuma’s home province and an ANC stronghold, has seen intraparty violence. It is also the party’s largest ANC branch and divisions run deep.

The outcome of this court case could determine the politics of not only the KwaZulu-Natal ANC, but also it will be quite instrumental on how the balance of forces is nationally.

There are of course deep, deep divisions as the court case points to.

Branches aligned to former premier Senzo Mchunu are contesting the outcome of the conference that saw him being booted.

If for example the case goes against the existing provincial ANC structure there, it turns everything on its head.

As you know, following that conference there was a reshuffle in the province. We saw the change in premier and a clean out of some of the MECs.
