Call to reopen Mapetla Mohapi's inquest

In light of the Ahmed Timol's case, DA MP and labour lawyer Michael Bagraim spoke to Stephen Grootes, standing in for Eusebius Mckaiser, about reopening an inquest on PAC activist Mapetla Mohapi.

Bagraim says if Timol's case can be reopened why not others?

Mapetla Mohapi died while in police detention on 5 August 1976.

During an inquest into his death, police produced a "suicide note", claiming he killed himself in his cell. The judge presiding over the case found that it was a true suicide despite the note being confirmed as a forgery by a leading British handwriting expert at the time.

No one was held responsible for Mohapi's death.

The Timol case that's going on at the moment has opened up a can of worms because there were a lot of 'suicides' in the 70s at the hands of the police.

Mohapi supposedly committed suicide in his jail cell while in Grahamstown. He managed to find a length of rope and a stool, wrote an English suicide note to his Xhosa speaking wife... the trial went on for a week and it was found that it was a true suicide.

Bagraim, a student at the time, attended the trial and says it had a profound impact on him.

I must admit at the time I was deeply traumatised and maybe we should call for those to be reopened as well.
