Gender Commission wants Manana dismissed to send strong message

The Commission for Gender Equality has called on President Jacob Zuma to dismiss deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana.

Manana admitted to assaulting Mandisa Duma at a Fourways nightclub last week after she apparently called him gay.

He was granted bail of R5000 and is facing two counts of assault, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The commission's Jabu Baloyi says they are not happy with government's response to Manana's behaviour.

Baloyi advises that the mixed messages by political leaders are undermining the institutions that are investigating and the voices of women.

The mixed messages being sent by political leaders is not helping the situation.

Initially, he was supposed to be suspended from all duties while the investigations are going on.

According to Baloyi, dismissing Manana will send an unequivocal message to would-be perpetrators that justice will be served.

Now, we are calling for him to be dismissed from office to send a strong message. These are the people that we must make examples of.

If we treat them with kid gloves, they will go back and do the same thing.

The DA is also laying a complaint with the commission and will extend it to include other allegations against Manana which have recently emerged.
