South African salary increases way above inflation. Are we being paid too much?

The average disposable salary in South Africa in March rose by 7.5 percent year-on-year to R10 919, according to the BankservAfrica Disposable Salary Index (BDSI).

This is down from the February figure of R11 971, but the year-on-year increase is still much higher than the four percent inflation rate.

This is the seventh consecutive month of above-inflation salary increases.

We interviewed Dr Caroline Belrose, Head of Fraud and Data Analytics at BankservAfrica.

Listen to the audio (scroll down) for more detail.

Unions are driving some of these large increases. Individuals earning higher wages are also getting larger increases, thereby affecting the average.
