"There are very real concerns that the ANC might split"

Two things dominated the ANC National Working Committee agenda on Monday says political analyst Karima Brown.

One is what to do with the so-called rebel MPs, and of course, the other is the future of Mduduzi Manana

Brown says there has been no formal communication from the NWC meeting as yet.

But she says it is clear the ANC as an organisation is deeply divided.

There were also bi-laterals from some provinces.

Those provincial heads such as Free State's Ace Magashula, known to support Jacob Zuma, unsurprisingly want action to be taken against the MPs who voted for the motion of no confidence last week in Parliament, she adds.

Mpumalanga and Limpopo also had bi-lateral meetings on Monday and have a different view says Brown.

While they believe the issue has to be dealt with, internally they are against what they call a 'witch hunt'.

There has been speculation about Derek Hanekom's attendance at the NWC given the President has singled him out. Brown confirms Hanekom was unable to attend.

Brown reminds us that the NWC does not have any enforceable decision-making powers.

It is not in a position to dictate terms....but is likely to sharpen the contradictions and deepen divisions.

Karima Brown, political analyst

Brown says if they do act against the MPs it will bring into question the integrity of the secret ballot.

She says the organisation and Jacob Zuma are very concerned as the revolt against him is in full force from many areas.

There are very real concerns that the ANC might split.
