Visual activists use work to highlight realities of women, LGBTI communities

A group exhibition featuring the work of six South African activists is on display during August at No Man’s Art Gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

'The Pride and Loss' exhibition opened at Amsterdam Pride, led by acclaimed photographer and visual activist Zanele Muholi.

The exhibitions are part of Muholi's Photo XP project, an initiative aimed at empowering others with photography skills.

The same collective of photographers are showing their work at an exhibition, titled 'On Visual Activism' at Constition Hill in Johannesburg.

Journalist, writer and curator Lerato Dumse spoke about the exhibition, the curation process and the inspiration behind the work of young women activists.

Muholi spoke about the power of using visual imagery to articulate the politics of identity and struggles faced by women and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community.

The exhibition on Pride and Loss is one of the most important visual documents of our lives.
