"Zweli Mkhize may be a very good fit as a compromise candidate"

Divisions emerge in provinces on actions to be taken against 'rebel' MPs and who should be next president.

There appears to be a division among key provinces on actions to be taken against ANC MPs who voted with the opposition.

Free State and KZN provinces had a joint meeting and concluded the 'rebel MPs' who voted for the motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma should be disciplined. Meanwhile, Limpopo and Mpumalanga met as well and said they should not be disciplined.

Political analyst, Ralph Mathekga says this has become a political football within the ANC itself. He says this has nothing to do with the motion of no confidence anymore because that has long passed but fits very well with the party's factional battles.

We are seeing different groups here taking very contrasting positions as to what ought to happen.

Ralph Mathekga, Political and Policy Analyst

In a meeting they held, Mpumalanga and Limpopo also said there should not be a contested ANC leadership election in December and that a consensus candidate should emerge.

Mathekga says the two provinces are sending a strong message that they don't like the two front runner, Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Zuma.

He says they might get their way if they are joined by two more provinces in their position.

It just shows how complicated this is getting each and everyday...

Ralph Mathekga, political and policy analyst

Mathekga says the compromise candidate may well be Zweli Mkhize who also may be a very good fit as deputy president going forward.

He wants people to look his way.

Ralph Mathekga, political and policy analyst

It is unusual to see the addition of new presidential candidates so close to the elective conference but it is a sign that the members are not happy with the two front runners are Dlamini-Zuma and Ramaphosa, adds Mathekga.
