Fikile Mbalula: If I was Mduduzi Manana I would resign

At a press briefing at Constitutional Hill, Johannesburg, the police minister, Fikile Mbalula has said that if he were higher education deputy minister Mduduzi Manana, he would have resigned without waiting for action to be taken against him.

This after Manana was accused of hitting a woman at a night club.

EWN reporter Mia Lindeque was at the briefing.

He said he would have stepped aside without waiting for the president or anyone telling him this is what he should do.

Mbalula said the case is very serious and if a woman came forward and accused him of raping her, he would have stepped aside without waiting for the outcome, reports Lindeque.

He also said Manana should not be protected regardless of his position.

He added this applies to anyone and said that the police are failing women in reporting gender based violence cases.

He acknowledged that some officers are more protective of the alleged attacker than the victim. And they question and doubt if the victim has been assaulted.

An App has been released to assist women in reporting gender based violence.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was also at the briefing and spoke about women's abuse. She said it is a cultural issue and nothing teaches young boys how they should treat women and parents play a pivotal role.
