Political analyst Karima Brown says Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ex-wife coming forward means his presidential campaign is "in it to win it."

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ex-wife coming forward to deny assault claims means his African National Congress (ANC) presidential campaign is "in it to win it", political analyst Karima Brown says.

Bathabile Dlamini last week said that there were ANC members worse than Higher Education Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana, who is accused of abusing a woman at a Fourways nightclub.

EFF leader Julius Malema, in an interview, said Dlamini was referring to Ramaphosa.

Ex-wife Hope Ramaphosa has since come to his defence, saying he isn't a violent person.

Cyril is not a violent person, he would rather negotiate and settle amicably than beat anyone up. He is very sensitive to women's issues and is gentle and kind...

Hope Ramaphosa

Political analyst Karima Brown says bringing in his extended family shows that Ramaphosa is serious.

This gives me the indication that the Ramaphosa campaign to become president of the ANC is agile, very much alive and is responsive to some of the challenges that they knew would come their way.

Karima Brown, political analyst and Talk At Nine host

“The ANC presidential race is often referred to as blood sport and many people were wondering whether the deputy president has the grit and in fact the stamina to participate in this campaign.”

Karima Brown, political analyst and Talk At Nine host

Brown says ANC presidential campaigns are often messy and filled with innuendos.

They responded to this so quickly after efforts to draw the deputy president into allegations, implicit or explicit, around his track record in terms of violence against women.
