Ahmed Timol's death took place in the afternoon of 27 October testifies witness

A mystery former security branch police officer took the stand on Wednesday to testify in the inquest into the death of Ahmed Timol.

According to Barry Bateman, the former police officer gave details of 27 October 1971, where on the day Timol died, the witness drove his commander and other security guards to Timol's family house.

He says he was just a driver and remained outside while the captain and others went into the house

He says they then returned to John Vorster Square by 4 pm and noticed the commotion of what was going on and some people saying someone jumped out the window.

He says he didn't see the body, he didn't investigate further - he went into his office on the 9th floor.

Bateman says the man is coloured and says the white security police put very little trust in him, so he wasn't involved with the investigation.

The witness didn't say much except that he noticed that Timol's death took place in the afternoon of 27 October.
